HEALTH INSURANCES

This branch lost its peculiarity of being the branch with the highest premium increase since two years. Health insurances got its share from the sector which could not produce the expected premium increase. Whilst the premium increase of the sector was of 81,62 percent, health branch stayed at 75,73 percent.

In order to support the government’s policy, the insurance companies tried to keep their premium increases below the medical inflation rates in 2000.

It is noteworthy to state that the increase ratios on the basis of years turned out to be decrease ratios, although health insurances were the most productive branch for years among other branches.

Rate competition which affected also the results of the sector, slowed a bit down in 2000 as the companies gave up to continue with their low price policies. However, continuation of misuses in an increasing way, over-usage of covers, encouragement of using health covers by the doctors and medical centers and the medical inflation’s being above the average inflation, have altogether hindered technical profitability also in 2000 by raising the ratio of indemnities/premiums.

It is of vital importance that the healthcare centers, 40% income of which is already provided by the insurance companies, must review their price policies for the coming years, starting with the reality that the rate increases must not be indexed as per medical inflation.

The number of the total of health assureds in this branch decreased by 5,86 percent to 690.363 in 2000 where as it was 733.339 in 1999.
